The Society was founded as Heraldry Australia Inc in 1973 and on 9 August 2008 changed its name to the Australian Heraldry Society Inc.

The Statement of Purpose of the society lists the following objectives:

• To increase and extend interest in and knowledge of Heraldry and allied subjects.
• To promote good and correct use of Heraldry in Australia.
• To establish a library of books, slides and documents etc of items of interest in Heraldry and allied subjects.
• To liaise with similar groups in Australia and Worldwide.
• To publish pamphlets, brochures, books or periodicals on Heraldic or related subjects.
• To hold or arrange meetings, seminars, and conferences for members and the general public to promote knowledge of heraldry.
• To undertake any other activity consistent with our prime objective.

We pursue our objectives by:

• producing a members' circular bimonthly
• producing a more scholarly journal, Heraldry News, quarterly.
• maintaining this web site.
• holding meetings of members.
• promoting heraldry by correspondence, submitting evidence to Parliamentary enquiries etc.
