Sydney
In Sydney in 2012 we will continue with Friday evening
meetings (mostly) alternating with Saturday morning meetings. The dates
and details for the meetings are:
- Saturday 14 April 2012 - Richard d’Apice AM, our
President, will speak on “John Lane Mullins, his Heraldry, his Bookplate
Collection and the Cataloguing Project”.
The State Library of New South Wales holds some fifty volumes of material
related to bookplates (also known as ex libris) collected by
John Lane Mullins, a Sydney lawyer, who died in 1939. This significant
resource does not appear to have been systematically examined in any
great detail, and the President and Hon. Secretary of our Society
have been engaged in a joint project with the President, Secretary
and another member of The New Australian Bookplate Society to do so.
- Friday 11 May 2012 - Ben Franklin, one of our fellow
members, will give an illustrated talk titled “Some More Personal
Heraldry Royal Navy Badges”, in which he will discuss the insignia
of the various British naval ships in which he served as chaplain.
Those who attended Ben’s talk in 2010 on the arms of the schools,
universities and other institutions he studied at will recall how
entertaining and informative that presentation was, and we look forward
to a lecture of similar quality.
- Friday 8 June 2012 - Launch in Sydney of Professor
Stephanie Trigg’s book on the history of the Order of the Garter.
Further details are to follow.
- Friday 13 July 2012 - The editor of the Members’
Circular, Bruce Baskerville, spent the period from September 2008
until December 2011 working on Norfolk Island as the Site Manager
of the World Heritage listed Kingston and Arthur’s Vale Historic Area.
By the time he gives this presentation he will be several months into
a PhD with a focus on the Australian Crown. In “Heraldry on Norfolk
Island”, Bruce will share with us something of the history of the
island and the use and display of heraldry within this unique territory.
- Saturday 11 August 2012 - The Annual General Meeting
of the Society will be held on this date. Further details are to follow.
- Friday 14 September 2012 - The theme of History Week
2012 is “Threads”. The History Council of NSW notes that, “long before
the fashonistas of today decided ‘the look’, dress was an important
element of human expression. From status to style, culture to professional
identity, clothes have defined us. History Week 2012 will explore
the history of threads and unpick the meaning behind the wardrobes
of the past.” In keeping with this theme, TAHS has been able to engage
a speaker on the topic of women’s heraldic apparel in the Middle Ages.
Robyn Boyer is a PhD candidate from Brisbane who is researching medieval
political philosophy. She also researches heraldry, heraldic display,
heraldic design, and pageantry as part of an interest in historical
recreation.
- Saturday 13 October 2012 - Dr Catherine Kovesi of
the University of Melbourne, whose principal research interest lies
in the area of Renaissance Italian cultures, has kindly agreed to
visit Sydney and present a paper on Italian imprese, to be titled
“The Use of Imprese for Self-Promotion in Renaissance Italy”. The
impresa, a type of personal badge, was very popular in the fifteenth
and sixteenth century, chiefly in Italy, and to a lesser extent in
France, but also elsewhere.
TIMES: Friday night meetings are 6:00pm for a 6:30pm
start (unless indicated otherwise), while Saturday morning meetings
are 10:00 for a 10:10 start.
As well as the featured speaker, members and other attendees
are encouraged to bring along any heraldic books or artifacts they might
care to display for the interest of others.
VENUE: The venue for all meetings in Sydney, unless
otherwise indicated, is The Sydney Mechanics School of Arts, Level 1,
280 Pitt St, Sydney. A gold coin donation for refreshments and to assist
with meeting the costs of the room is always greatly appreciated.
RSVP: Please endeavour to advise the Hon. Secretary
if you intend to attend a meeting, either by e-mail to secretary AT heraldryaustralia.org
or by telephone call or text message to 0431 701 055. This courtesy
is greatly appreciated as it assists in setting up seating in the room
and planning for catering.
